ZFS Storage 7320 initial setup

The Sun ZFS Storage 7320 System consists of either a single storage controller, or two storage controllers in a high availability cluster configuration, and one to four Sun Disk Shelves. The initial setup is done while both heads are in factory default configuration, so basically configure one head with hostname, domain, IP etc and join the second head to cluster.

Each head should have dedicated IP for administrative purpose, this IP (as cluster resource) should be locked to the head, since this IP should not fail over to another head. This is because in case of fail-over, you still want to access a head for management or troubleshoot purpose.

Cluster can be active-passive or active-active. I usually see more of active-active, where both heads own some resources, like shares or LUN.

In this example two heads are SUN FIRE X4170 M2 server and they are running latest software ak/nas@2013.06.05.7.8,1-1.1 (as of July 2017). Each head has two connected NICs as per this diagram.

Head stor2a
NIC0 - stor2a (dedicated hostname, locked IP)
NIC2 - stor2 (service hostname/IP, fail-over so clients use this for NFS mount, in case of active-passive cluster)

      -------------------------
     | head STOR2A
     |
     | NICs
     | -----------------
     | | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
     | -----------------
     | | |
     |------|-------|-----------
            | |
            | |
           \|/ \|/

host/IP: stor2a stor2
        (locked)

Head stor2b
NIC1 - stor2b (dedicated hostname, locked IP)
NIC2 - stor2 (service hostname/IP, fail-over so clients use this for NFS mount, in case of active-passive cluster)

     -------------------------
     | head STOR2B
     |
     | NICs
     | -----------------
     | | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
     | -----------------
     | | |
     |------ ---|---|-----------
                | |
                | |
               \|/ \|/

host/IP: stor2b stor2
           (locked)

While joining second head to cluster, you'll be asked to provide heads hostname and root's password, as the image shows:

On the console of the second head, it will read "Joining cluster ..."

Here is the cluster view on both heads, see resources owned by heads and see the lock image, that's the locked IP you don't want to fail-over.
Here it's shown how three cables for intra cluster communications need to be connected.
